Bristol Board

When it comes to drawing paper I need something that’s tough and can hold up to the abuse that it’s going to take.

When I draw a picture I do lot’s of shading, blending, and erasing that a thin, flimsy paper just can’t handle.

Bristol board is a thick, heavy weight paper that’s almost like a card stock. It can take the abuse that I put it through.

If you’re just learning to draw then by all means practice on something cheap but when you’re ready to start creating finished works of art, something you may even wish to frame, you’ll want to use a quality, durable paper.

My Top Pencil Choice

My pencil of choice is Derwent. I’ve tried many different pencil options over the years and Derwent is my favorite, hands down. They are very high quality pencils at a reasonable price.

I always get a consistent product as well. With some pencils you may get a darker or lighter tone than you’re expecting but with Derwent I always know what to expect. I get good smooth tones and consistent quality.

Derwent pencils range from 9H (the hardest) to 9B (the softest). I like to get the soft set that ranges from H to 9B. I rarely use a pencil harder than 2H so I would either get the soft set or the medium set.
